Ajax James was a much loved member of the Brisbane Pride Choir who died suddenly in 2023, from a medical episode. They sang with the Basses, were our Gig Co-ordinator, and led the fun at World Pride in Sydney. We were heartbroken to lose Ajax.
After Ajax’s death, their family made a substantial donation to the choir and at the following AGM the choir decided to use this money to establish a scholarship fund in Ajax’s name. It is dedicated to providing a helping hand to those who might be facing challenges. We understand that life can be tough, and sometimes a little support can go a long way. That's why this scholarship aims to make life a bit easier, allowing cherished members to continue being a part of our vibrant choir family, surrounded by love and encouragement. This is a fitting tribute to Ajax, who was known for their deep care for family, friends, and community. They believed in supporting one another and spreading love in all aspects of life.
The Ajax James Scholarship includes a new choir shirt and one-year of membership fees. We are now calling for applications for the 2024-5 Ajax James Scholarship. Applicants can be nominated by a friend, a family member, another choir member, or can self-nominate. Applicants need to:
Identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and
Be a Pre-existing Member of the Brisbane Pride Choir (since the last open rehearsals)
Applications will be considered – and held in confidence - by two elders of the choir, Barbara Sullivan (altos) and Deborah Pennington (sopranos).
Applications for the calendar year will open in March, if we receive no applicants or the scholarship is vacant for the second half of the year then applications will re-open again in August.
If you want to apply for this scholarship please send an email to Barbara (barbara.sullivan4005@gmail.com). In this email tell us who you are and include a short statement of your life situation (whatever you wish to disclose).
This personal information will only be seen by Barbara and Deb and will not be disclosed to anyone else. The name of the person selected to receive this scholarship will be disclosed to the Pride Choir President and Treasurer but will not be publicly announced.
